World Champion spearfisher Joseba Kerejeta tragically passed away while spearfishing on Friday, 22 April 2016.
The sea that he loved so much snatched his life, while he enjoyed his greatest passion.
Kerejeta was born in 1968 in Durango, Spain. A firefighter by profession, married with two kids, 2 and 6 years-old, he won the world spearfishing title in Venezuela in 2008. He also won a spearfishing championship in Spain in 2006.
Joseba was a great traveler. When he was a little more than twenty years old, he made his first big trip to America as an assistant on a sailboat across the Atlantic from the Canaries to the Caribbean and since then has toured five continents. All these trips have given Joseba great knowledge of the different seas, oceans and fish, allowing him to accumulate great experience and new diving techniques, making Joseba, an "off-road" spearo.
In recent years, a "bad decompression" in one of its sessions forced him to leave competitions and dedicate in training sea enthusiasts in spearfishing.
In order to share his experience, a lecture at the Blue Wild Expo entitled "A Spearfishing, way of life" was scheduled. Kerejeta took the trip to Maiami to visit a friend and make a few dives. For unknown reasons, the former world champion's body was found floating in the water. He was 48 years old.
